Lipedema is a condition still largely unknown, often confused with obesity or lymphedema. However, it is a distinct condition that requires special attention. In this article, we aim to provide more information about this condition and raise public awareness about its manifestations.

A condition still too unknown

The prevalence of lipedema is still not well-defined, but it is estimated that about one in ten women is affected. The causes are debated among specialists and can vary, ranging from pure heredity (in 2 out of 3 cases) to triggering hormonal factors such as puberty, pregnancy, contraceptive use, or menopause. Additionally, lipedema can be associated with venous and/or lymphatic insufficiency, which further complicates its diagnosis and management.

Symptoms of Lipedema

They are numerous and their intensity can vary from person to person. Among the common manifestations, we find :

  • Difficulty in dressing or putting on shoes,
  • Swellings,
  • Feelings of heaviness,
  • Almost constant pain,
  • Bruises on the affected areas,
  • Loss of mobility,
  • Difficulty in accepting one’s body,
  • Depression and even excessive weight gain
