Hello, please introduce yourself
Mohamed Kara, operating assistant to Dr. Nicolas Zwillinger. I’m a state-registered nurse and trained as an operating assistant in plastic and reconstructive surgery, gynecological surgery and ophthalmology.
How long have you been working with Dr. Zwillinger?
I’ve known him for 13 years and worked with him for two.
Can you give us some more details about the typical operation?
The doctor and I welcome patients to the operating room. Once they’ve settled in, the anaesthetists and I.A.D.E. technicians (state-registered nurse anaesthetists) prepare the procedure. When everything is ready, we can introduce ourselves to the patient. I take the material from the table prepared for me by the nurse dresser, and baste the areas to be operated on. Once they’ve been slathered, the doctor and I use drapes (single-use strips of sterile tissue) to set up the surgical site. And everything’s ready!
Do you have any advice for patients before the operation?
The nurses will ask them a lot of questions before their procedure: confirm that they are fasting, that they don’t have contact lenses, that they don’t have dentures, that they have metal implants… I advise them to relax and prepare well for the big day.
Mr. Mohamed Kara, any tips for managing stress?
The nurse on duty will also help them manage their anxiety and may give them sedatives to relax them. Some patients undergoing local anaesthesia can be very stressed, and when we see that this stress is too great, we propose, in agreement with the anaesthetist, sedation to relax them and make them feel better. We can see right away when a patient is stressed, so we relax them with a little joke and reassure them as much as possible!
