At 37, after 20 years of suffering from lipedema, I finally found a solution that radically changed my life. But it hasn’t been an easy journey. For two decades, I desperately searched for an explanation for my problem: legs that looked like “poles” », heavy, painful and misshapen. Every day was a struggle against physical and psychological suffering.

The search for a solution: a never-ending battle

I tried everything in my power to alleviate my symptoms. Lymphatic drainage, manual palpating and rolling, compression stockings, drastic diets, intensive sport… Nothing helped. I lost weight on my upper body, but my lower legs remained unchanged, and the difference just kept getting worse.

The pain was unbearable: heavy legs, constantly painful knee joints, a huge weight to lift with every step. Psychologically, it was a real burden. I couldn’t even dress properly, I didn’t even dare look at myself in the mirror.

I spent years hiding, avoiding social situations where I felt judged or misunderstood. Lipedema is not a high-profile disease, and few people understand what a sufferer goes through on a daily basis. This loneliness and pain was one of the hardest things for me to bear.

The Discovery of Lipoedema

On a last-ditch attempt, I decided to consult an angiologist, believing that my subsequent problems were due to venous insufficiency. To my great surprise, this doctor finally put words to my suffering: “You suffer from lipedema. » It was a relief, but also a shock. It was explained to me that only surgery could permanently solve my problem.

Lipoedema is a little-known condition, often confused with obesity, but it’s an abnormal accumulation of fat in the lower limbs, usually accompanied by pain and heaviness. Unfortunately, this condition is often poorly treated and under-treated, delaying treatment for sufferers.

Liberation through Surgery

Once the diagnosis had been made, I made an appointment to see Dr. Zwillinger. It was the first time I’d heard a concrete solution to my problem. In an instant, I felt an immense sense of liberation. I finally had a name for the disease, and above all, a solution: surgery.

We agreed on a two-stage procedure: first, the thighs and knees, the areas most affected, followed three months later by the calves and ankles. Lipoedema surgery is a procedure that removes excess fat accumulated in the lower limbs, while preserving the surrounding tissue. After the operation, 12 liters were removed from my legs.

A Resurrection After Surgery

It’s now been 15 days since the operation, and I feel like a new person. The pain is gone, I can walk easily without feeling any heaviness, and above all, I feel free of the weight that had been weighing me down for years. The operation was like a rebirth.

I’ve rediscovered simple gestures I haven’t done in a long time: climbing the stairs without getting out of breath, getting dressed without having to hide, and above all, appreciating my reflection in the mirror again. The scars are still there, but for me they symbolize renewal, a sign of courage and liberation.

Not only did the procedure make me feel better physically, it also gave my self-confidence a huge boost. Lipedema affects not only the body, but also the mind. When you’re finally rid of this invisible, physical weight, you can really let go.

A New Beginning

I would like to express my deep gratitude to Dr. Zwillinger and his team for their professionalism, attentiveness and kindness. Thanks to them, I can now live life to the full, without the physical and emotional constraints of lipoedema.

Today, I feel ready to take on new experiences, and to invest in personal and professional projects that I had put aside for lack of confidence. My advice to anyone suffering from lipedema is not to give up hope and to consult a specialist. There is a solution, and it can be life-changing.
