Lipoedema testimonial: How surgery changed my life after 20 years
At 37, after suffering from lipedema for 20 years, I finally found a solution that radically changed my life.
But this journey has not been easy. For two decades, I desperately searched for an explanation for my problem:
legs that looked like "poles," heavy, painful, and misshapen.
Every day was a struggle against physical and psychological suffering.
The search for a solution: a never-ending battle
I tried everything in my power to relieve my symptoms. Lymphatic drainage, manual palpate-roll massage, compression stockings, drastic diets, intensive exercise... Nothing worked. I lost weight on my upper body, but my lower legs remained unchanged, and the difference continued to grow.
The pain was unbearable: heavy legs, constantly aching knee joints, an enormous weight to lift with every step. Psychologically, it was a real burden. I couldn't dress properly and didn't even dare look at myself in the mirror anymore.
I spent years hiding, avoiding social situations where I felt judged or misunderstood. Lipedema is not a well-known condition, and few people understand what someone with lipedema goes through on a daily basis. This loneliness in pain was one of the hardest things to bear.
The discovery of lipedema
It was during a final attempt that I decided to consult an angiologist, thinking that my subsequent problems were due to venous insufficiency.
To my surprise, this doctor finally put a name to my suffering: "You have lipedema." It was a huge relief, but also a shock. I was told that only surgery could permanently fix my problem.
Lipoedema is a little-known condition that is often confused with obesity, but it is actually an abnormal accumulation of fat in the lower limbs, usually accompanied by pain and heaviness.
Unfortunately, this disease is often poorly treated and undertreated, which delays care for those who suffer from it.
Freedom through surgery
Once the diagnosis was made, I made an appointment with Dr. Zwillinger. It was the first time I had heard a concrete solution to my problem.
In an instant, I felt an immense sense of relief. I finally had a name for this disease, and above all, a solution: surgery.
We agreed on a two-stage procedure: first, the thighs and knees, the most affected areas, then three months later, the calves and ankles.
Lipoedema surgery is a procedure that removes excess fat accumulated in the lower limbs while preserving the surrounding tissue. After undergoing the operation, 12 liters were removed from my legs.
A resurrection after surgery
It's been two weeks since the procedure, and I feel like a new person.
The pain has disappeared, I can walk easily without feeling any heaviness, and above all, I feel liberated from this burden that had been weighing me down for years. This operation has been a real rebirth.
I am rediscovering simple actions that I had not performed in a long time: climbing stairs without getting out of breath, getting dressed without having to hide myself, and above all, enjoying my reflection in the mirror again.
The scars are still there, but to me they symbolize renewal, a sign of courage and liberation.
This procedure not only made me feel better physically, but it also gave my self-confidence a huge boost. Lipedema affects not only the body, but also the mind. When you finally get rid of this invisible, physical weight, you experience a real sense of release.
A fresh start
I would like to express my deep gratitude to Dr. Zwillinger and his team for their professionalism, attentiveness, and kindness.
Thanks to them, I can now live life to the fullest, without the physical and emotional constraints of lipoedema.
Today, I feel ready to embrace new experiences and invest myself in personal and professional projects that I had put aside due to a lack of confidence. I advise anyone suffering from lipedema not to lose hope and to consult a specialist. A solution exists, and it can transform your life.
