On the occasion of her visit to the Clinique Étoile, this patient of Doctor Nicolas Zwillinger shares with us her journey from adolescence to the present day. On the eve of her 40th birthday, she decided to undergo WAL liposuction surgery on her legs.
1. Could you please introduce yourself?
My name is Mrs H, I’m 39, I have a 13-year-old son and I’ve been married for 20 years.
2. You were operated on today for lipedema by Doctor Nicolas Zwillinger. Could you describe your life with this pathology affecting your legs?
Since adolescence, puberty, I’ve noticed that I had fatty deposits spreading all over my body, especially around my knees, calves and thighs. I’d tried several diets even as a teenager and nothing helped, it just wouldn’t go away. These areas, my legs, were full of fat. I tried everything: lymphatic drainage, sport (tennis, aquabike…), dieting. I had all the tests I could think of, but people kept telling me “it’s genetic! After all, I’m from the Maghreb, so I’m from the Mediterranean, but I didn’t really see the connection. But I was always told “it’s genetic” or “you don’t do enough sport”.
3. When were you able to say “lipedema”?
I discovered the word “lipedema” recently, and when I looked it up, I said to myself:
“It’s 2022, there must be solutions”.
Not long ago I found Dr Nicolas Zwillinger on social networks, as well as other surgeons abroad. Everyone does what they want, but I live in France, we’re in Paris and there are bound to be professionals who can meet my expectations. I didn’t want to go anywhere else.
I spoke to several women who were also affected by this pathology and who had undergone surgery with Dr Nicolas Zwillinger, and I was able to find answers to my questions. After all, I’ve been dreaming of doing something with my legs for 25 years, and today it finally came true!
4. Tell us about your first meeting with Dr. Nicolas Zwillinger
The first appointment with Doctor Nicolas Zwillinger took place remotely, by video-consultation. He immediately confirmed the diagnosis of lipedema. When you see my legs, it’s not so obvious, but yes, I do have lipedema. He said he could structure my leg, restore its shape and, above all, avoid the discomfort I’ve had for several years: fatigue, post legs…

5. You’ve just undergone spinal anaesthesia at Clinique Étoile. Tell us about your experience.
I wasn’t stressed about spinal anaesthesia, because I had my 13-year-old baby boy today, by Caesarean section, so I was already familiar with it. With spinal anesthesia, the needle is less impressive. The advantage of this type of anaesthesia is that your whole upper body is mobile, so you can hear the whole operation (what’s being said), or you can put on your headphones and listen to your music. Above all, recovery is much better, and there’s less of the “sluggish” feeling you get with general anaesthesia, but there was nothing at all there for me to do.
I didn’t feel anything during the operation, I was a little apprehensive but I could just feel it moving. Everything is well done, there’s an operating field, you can’t see anything during the operation.
6. At the end of the operation, you were able to see your legs. What were your first thoughts?
“Wow!!! These aren’t mine! These aren’t my legs! “
It’s all fine, really pretty and shapely. You can see the results straight away, and I can’t wait to see how it looks in a few months’ time.
With compression stockings and biflex bands, the results are already quite impressive.
7. How did you feel when you left the operating theatre?
During the operation nothing at all, after some pain of course. The lower body had to endure some trauma all the same, but it’s the only solution for treating this localized fat.

8. How have you been feeling since returning to your room?
Well, the nurses were able to accompany me to get up for the first time. They gave me time to get ready, I was apprehensive about the discomfort, but everything went smoothly, there were steps to follow. I didn’t even have to hold on to them. Everything went really well!
