Lipedema treatment
Dive into the world of the lipoedema clinic with Dr. Nicolas Zwillinger and his team. to find out all you need to know about this little-known disease.
Complementary to a healthy lifestyle:
For the treatment of lipedema, there are no drugs that can make it disappear. However, venotonics can be prescribed by your GP to improve venous circulation and reduce pain.
You can influence the evolution of this disease by following a healthy diet before and after surgery.
Lipedema treatment
- Combined with a nutrition program
- Combined with regular exercise
- Complemented by daily wearing of compression stockings
- Manual lymphatic drainage sessions
- In conjunction with pressotherapy
1. Treatment of lipedema combined with a nutrition program
A healthy, balanced diet is essential to avoid excess fat and sugar. Certain anti-inflammatory diets can help reduce pain, but it is important to note that diet alone will not make lipedema disappear. We recommend consulting a nutritionist to develop a diet tailored to your condition.
2. Treatment of lipedema combined with regular exercise
Regular physical activity is strongly recommended. Water sports such as swimming and aquabiking, ideally wearing compression garments, are particularly recommended for their draining properties. However, it is important to note that intensive exercise will only have an effect on the "healthy" parts of your body.
After surgery, we encourage a quick return to normal activities to help the patient regain normal walking ability. Passive and dynamic stretching exercises can be performed by the patient alone at home from the very first days. Physical activities in cold environments, such as aquabiking, cold water baths, and cryotherapy chambers, are also possible to reduce swelling.
3. Treatment of lipedema supplemented by daily wearing of compression stockings
4. Lipedema treatment and manual lymphatic drainage sessions
Many patients feel relief after manual lymphatic drainage sessions performed by a physical therapist. However, this feeling of lightness and refinement is short-lived, hence the need for regular sessions.
Manual lymphatic drainage sessions, performed regularly using the Vodder or Renata methods, provide relief from pain and swelling. They can be performed by a physical therapist, naturopath, or in certain beauty centers. A session should last at least 45 minutes and can last up to 1.5 hours, depending on the areas being treated. Lymphatic drainage promotes better blood and lymphatic circulation.
5. Treatment of lipedema in parallel with pressotherapy
Pressotherapy optimizes surgical results by limiting post-operative effects and promoting fluid drainage.
Pressotherapy improves blood and lymphatic circulation using devices such as boots for the lower limbs or sleeves for the upper limbs. This technique applies pressure at regular intervals, with varying degrees of intensity depending on the areas being treated.
A pressotherapy session lasts between 20 and 30 minutes and can be performed at a physical therapist's office or at home.
Pressotherapy also helps optimize surgical results by limiting post-operative effects and promoting fluid drainage.
All of these medical treatments improve quality of life and slow the progression of lipedema.
However, surgical treatment of lipedema remains the only lasting solution. It is based on a liposuction technique known as "W.A.L." (Water Assisted Liposuction) using the BODY-JET device.
