My general practitioner denies
my symptoms of lipedema
and refuses to refer me to an angiologist: what should I do?

It can be difficult to feel misunderstood by your doctor, especially when you are experiencing symptoms that are not recognized or taken seriously. This can be particularly frustrating if you suffer from conditions that are still relatively unknown, such as lipedema.

If your general practitioner does not identify your symptoms or refuses to refer you to an angiologist, there are several avenues you can explore to obtain appropriate care.

Why do some doctors struggle to recognize lipedema?

Lipedema, still poorly understood in the medical community, remains a condition that is relatively unknown to some healthcare professionals. Several factors may explain this reluctance:

  • Lack of knowledge about the condition: Not all doctors are necessarily trained in lipedema, and some may confuse it with other problems, such as obesity or water retention.
  • Lack of clear recommendations: Lipedema is not yet recognized in all medical classifications, which can lead to its severity being downplayed.
  • Medical biases: Sometimes symptoms can be attributed to external factors, such as lifestyle habits, rather than being considered as an underlying medical condition.

What symptoms should be cause for concern?

If you want your doctor to take your situation seriously, it is important to describe your symptoms clearly. Signs that may indicate lipedema include:

  • Abnormal accumulation of fat on the legs and/or arms, often symmetrical and resistant to diet or exercise.
  • Spontaneous pain and hypersensitivity, even in the absence of pressure.
  • Frequent bruising, for no apparent reason.
  • Feeling of heavy, swollen legs, aggravated by heat.
  • Worsening of symptoms during hormonal periods, such as puberty, pregnancy, or menopause.

How should you respond to a refusal to provide a reference?

If your general practitioner does not refer you to an angiologist, here are some possible solutions:

Seek a second medical opinion You always have the option of consulting another professional. Another doctor may be more inclined to listen to your concerns and refer you to a competent specialist.

Make an appointment directly with an angiologist In some cases, it is possible to consult an angiologist without a referral from your doctor, although the cost may be partially or fully reimbursed depending on your healthcare plan.

Build a strong medical case Compiling a complete file can help to highlight your symptoms. This file may include a diary of your symptoms, photos showing the progression of your condition, and references to medical studies.

Finding a doctor who is familiar with lipedema Some facilities, such as La Clinique du Lipœdème, offer consultations with specialized professionals. If no specialist is available near you, a teleconsultation could also be a viable solution.

Reaching out to patient organizations Patient associations can offer support, practical advice, and information about healthcare professionals who are knowledgeable about lipedema.

Asserting your rights in the event of unjustified refusal If you believe that a refusal to consult is unjustified, there are remedies available. You can contact the Medical Association or request a mediator from the Health Insurance Fund to review your situation.

Why is early diagnosis essential?

Early diagnosis not only allows for faster and more appropriate treatment, but also prevents potential complications.

Treatments such as lymphatic drainage, compression, or appropriate physical activity can significantly improve patients' quality of life.
